DIY Body Scrubs |winter skincare

What better way to get softer and smoother skin than making your own body scrubs! The recipes are endless so I’m going to share a few of my favourite recipes I’ve personally tried and loved. Since winter is literally round the corner your skincare needs will definitely start to change. The first thing you’ll probably notice is your skin may start to feel drier because of the colder temperature, so one of the best ways is through exfoliation. This technique removes the layer of dead skin cells so that moisture can reach the newer and healthier cells beneath. Exfoliation also helps improve skins appearance with more even tones and a natural glow. The best part is that these body scrubs all contain a natural oil that will leave your skin feeling moisturised and protected during the winter months.

The body scrubs use either sea salt or sugar which are great exfoliants. Sea salt draws toxins from your skin and increases circulation which leaves a healthy glow to your skin. Sugar is great to use in winter because it is a natural humectant meaning it draws moisture from the environment into the skin which hydrates your skin for much longer. With these recipes you can tailor them to suit your needs. I tend to combine both salt and sugar so I get all the benefits!

VANILLA COCONUT

coco
  • 1/2 Cup Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (the one with the coconut aroma)
  • 1 Cup White Sugar
  • Seeds From 1 Vanilla Pod (or more for extra vanilla aroma)*

Scrape the seeds from the vanilla pod, then mix the sugar and vanilla seeds thoroughly in a bowl. (For a more intense aroma leave the sugar and vanilla in a tight container for about 3 days prior to making your scrub) Next add the coconut oil and stir ingredients thoroughly. Store in a jar and use when needed. This scrub smells so amazing!!

*if you don’t have vanilla pods use 1T of Vanilla Extract

LAVENDER & SEA SALT

Lav

  • 1 cup sea salt
  • 2-3 sprigs dried lavender
  • 2-6 drops lavender essential oil
  • 1 cup grapeseed oil

In a mixing bowl add the sea salt, sprigs of lavender and mix well. Then add the grape seed oil and lavender essential and stir the ingredients thoroughly. Store in an air tight container and use when needed.

I love lavender so this is the scrub i use most out of these recipes! In this recipe I use grapeseed oil because it is a light oil and easily absorbs into the skin. It also contains antioxidants and linoleic acid, which is great for promoting skin health. Lavender is very calming to the skin and it increases circulation.

The best part of making your own bath products is knowing what is really in them. Just a quick TIP: When exfoliating be gentle on your skin and don’t put too much pressure. Let the sugar/salt do the work, too much pressure will leave tiny and irritate your skin. No-one wants that I’m sure! So BE GENTLE!
